Transform Your Mornings

A Guide to Decluttering and Organizing Your Bedroom Closet
January 2024

With the start of the new year, I like to pay special attention to each room in my home, doing a deep clean and declutter. An often overlooked space, our bedrooms are the first things we see in the morning and the last things we see when we go to bed at night. Believe it or not, those seemingly small moments have a huge impact on our daily routines, our days, and therefore our lives. Now let’s talk about the heart of our morning routine: our closets. It’s not just about decluttering, it’s about creating a space that streamlines your mornings and sparks positive feelings every time you open those doors. In this blog post, I’ll be sharing my best tips and tricks on how to keep your bedroom closet feeling fresh, serene, and organized.
One of the most common frustrations I’ve heard from my clients over the years is that they don’t know where to start. They open the doors to their closets, take one look, close the doors, and walk away. Here are a few of my tried-and-true organizing and decluttering tips:
Work on one small section at at time.
This will help you break your space up into more manageable sections. Whether it’s one bag, one box, one shelf, or one pile on a chair… pick one and start. Focus only on that section until it’s been decluttered and the remaining items put away in their place, or sorted into a queue to be put away in a few moments, once you’ve made space for them. Once you’ve finished with that section, move onto another bite-sized task. You’ve got this!! If you’re really stuck on where to begin, consider working top to bottom, left to right.

Organize your items so that…
  1. You’re storing similar items together. If you have swimsuits in 3 different spots, you’re likely to misplace them, or forget you have them all together.
  2. There is some breathing room between items. Think of walking into a generic store in the mall… clothes are all piled up, falling off hangers, you can’t find anything in your size because the racks are so disorganized. Now think about walking into an expensive boutique… there are fewer items of better quality, and items are displayed beautifully and intentionally. Which store would you rather your closet resemble?

Find a great place to donate before you declutter.
Having a clear vision in your mind of where/who your items will be passed down to will make it so much easier to give them to a better home as opposed to

Take a step back.
At times it can be helpful to take a step back and look at your space with a wider frame of reference. Organizing is like doing a puzzle or playing a game of Tetris. There is a way that everything can fit beautifully, it’s just a matter of rotating the pieces and fitting them into the correct spots.
Declutter items that…
  • Are too big, too short, too long, or too small: I say this in a loving way, but you need to be real with yourself. I’ve been guilty in the past of holding onto clothes that will never fit me again, thinking that “someday” they may fit. But they never will. And holding onto them is impeding on my life, my mood, and my organizational systems. If you’ve been holding onto a pair of jeans or dress for more than three years in hopes of fitting into it again one day, just let go of it. If you lose the weight, you’ll probably want to celebrate by purchasing a new dress anyways, am I right?! I know I would!
  • Are uncomfortable: Take this as a sign to let go of that knit sweater you never wear because it’s itchy. Even if it was expensive, just get a new sweater, one that you enjoy wearing! You can thank me later 🙂
  • Are damaged or worn out beyond repair: Need I say more?
  • Are duplicates or very similar to something else you have: If you are limited on space and have multiple items that are all very similar, consider pairing down your collection.
  • You don’t want, need, or love: The main one that comes to mind from this category is: gifts. People feel like the need to hang onto things because they were gifts. But I can confidently say that the gifter would rather you keep your peace of mind than the mug they picked up for $12 at Target.
  • You don’t wear often: Turning all of your hangers backwards is a great way to know which clothes you actually wear. After 6 months or a year, any items that have the hanger facing the correct way have been worn. Consider letting go of the others.
  • You don’t feel confident in: How do the clothes make YOU feel? Do you feel confident in them? Are they an accurate representation of how you want to show up in the world?
  • You’re only keeping for sentimental reasons: We don’t need to keep things to keep memories. But if you really can’t part with a sentimental item, I suggest storing it in a “keepsakes” bin somewhere that you can pull out every now and then to take a trip down memory lane, but isn’t getting in your way every day.
Consider setting some guidelines for yourself moving forward.
Perhaps there is a certain color palette you want to stick to, or certain fabrics you like. Setting a standard for your wardrobe will help you think before you purchase, helping you save money and space in your closet.

Label, label, label!
Labeling is such an important part of every organizing project. Labels help you, your husband, your kids, your in-laws, or your cleaning lady to know exactly where everything goes.

Investing time and effort in decluttering and organizing your bedroom closet is a transformative act of self-care. As you navigate through the process, remember that each item you choose to keep or let go of has the power to shape not just your space, but your daily rituals and, ultimately, your life. Embrace the simplicity and joy that a well-organized closet brings, allowing yourself the freedom to start and end each day with a sense of calm and serenity. Here's to a clutter-free space and a brighter, more intentional tomorrow!
